INDUSTRY CHECKLIST · AUTO DETAILING

The auto detailing shop insurance checklist

QUICK ANSWER

Auto detailing usually carry garage liability, workers' compensation and commercial property. Detail shops hold customers' cars for hours or days, buff paint with machines that burn through it, apply coatings with solvents, and move vehicles around a lot where one scrape is a claim. Your landlord and the lender ask for proof of each. The checklist below says what every item does, who requires it and how to check it on the policies you already have.

Who asks an auto detailing shop for what

Who What they usually want to see
Landlords & commercial leases General liability with the landlord as additional insured, property coverage on tenant improvements and workers' compensation
Banks, lenders & SBA loans Property or auto physical damage with the lender as loss payee, and liability proof at closing and every renewal
Enterprise clients & vendor onboarding General liability, professional or cyber liability, workers' compensation and often an umbrella

Each of them wants a certificate, and most want it again at every renewal. A live certificate link from the wallet shows today's coverage to every holder and tells them when it changes.

How to check what you already have

  1. Garage declarations. Garage liability limits, then garagekeepers: the limit per location against the value of customers' vehicles on hand, and whether it is legal liability or direct primary.
  2. Workers' compensation information page. Item 3.A must list every state you work in, item 4 must carry the right class codes, and the employers' liability limits should meet what contracts ask. Check that the estimated payroll is close to this year's.
  3. Property section. Limits for building, business personal property and tenant improvements against replacement cost, the coinsurance percentage, the deductible, and whether flood and earthquake are excluded (they usually are).
  4. Auto schedule. Every vehicle listed with the right garaging address and use; symbols that include hired and non-owned auto; physical damage with the lender as loss payee where the vehicle is financed.
  5. Pollution liability. Site-based or contractors form, claims-made or occurrence, the materials named (mold, asbestos, lead, fuels), and transport and disposal coverage.
  6. Business owner's policy declarations. Liability limits on the first page, then the property section: building (if you own), business personal property, business income and the named extras such as spoilage, equipment breakdown or employee dishonesty. Confirm the property values are current.
  7. Business income. The limit or actual-loss-sustained wording, the waiting period, the period of restoration and whether extra expense is included.
  8. Employment practices declarations. Limit and retention, third-party coverage for claims by customers, and whether wage-and-hour claims carry any defence sublimit.
  9. Crime declarations. Employee theft, forgery, funds-transfer fraud and social engineering each have their own limit; third-party coverage if you work in clients' premises.

What usually goes wrong for auto detailing shops

  • Paint burned through during correction, denied as property in your care.
  • Customers' cars on the lot overnight with legal-liability garagekeepers only.
  • Tenant improvements insured by nobody, because the lease says one thing and the policy another.
  • Property values set when the doors opened and never raised.
  • Garagekeepers written on a legal-liability basis when customers expect direct primary coverage.
  • Hot-work warranties in the policy that require a fire watch after the torch goes out; miss it and the fire claim is denied.

What underwriters will ask an auto detailing shop

  • Vehicles on site overnight and their value, the services offered (coatings, paint correction), and the number of technicians
  • Square footage, whether you own or lease, the building's age and sprinklers
  • Replacement cost of the equipment, fixtures and stock on site
  • Number of vehicles on the lot overnight and their typical value
  • Whether you store, tow or drive customers' vehicles off premises
  • Hot-work permits and fire-watch practice

Renewal timing

Workers' compensation is audited on actual payroll and liability on sales, so a busy year ends with a bill unless the estimates were kept honest; pay-as-you-go billing through your payroll company removes most of that. Renewal autopilot starts the comparison sixty days out, prefilled from the wallet.

Questions people actually ask

We damaged paint during a correction. Covered?

Under garagekeepers coverage, yes, which is why a detailer carries a garage policy rather than plain general liability. General liability excludes the vehicle in your care; garagekeepers exists for exactly this claim.

Is a car stolen from our lot overnight covered?

Under garagekeepers, when it is written on a direct primary basis or when you are legally liable. Legal-liability-only coverage can leave a theft uncovered if nobody was negligent; read the declarations for which you have.

Doesn't my landlord's insurance cover my auto detailing shop?

It covers the building. The lease almost always makes you responsible for your own improvements, equipment and stock, for injuries inside your space, and for naming the landlord as additional insured on your liability policy. Read the insurance clause; the contract checker in the wallet will pull it out for you.

What is the difference between legal liability and direct primary garagekeepers?

Legal liability pays only when the damage is your fault. Direct primary pays for the customer's car in your care regardless of fault, which is what keeps a hail storm or a break-in from becoming a customer dispute. The declarations page says which you have.

Why do carriers ask about hot work?

A torch or a welder is the most common cause of a large fire claim in the trades, so policies carry hot-work conditions: a permit, a fire extinguisher at hand and a fire watch after the work stops. Follow them and the coverage holds; skip them and the claim is contested.
