Matching inland marine and equipment coverage

QUICK ANSWER

Inland marine insurance covers property that moves or sits away from your premises: contractors' tools and equipment, installation materials, mobile equipment, property in transit and equipment you rent or borrow. Carriers rate it on the values, how the equipment is used and stored, and theft history. CoverMatch compares scheduled items, blanket limits for small tools, valuation, deductibles and the coverage for rented and borrowed equipment.

01 / WHAT UNDERWRITERS ASK
  • A list of equipment worth more than a stated amount each, with year, make, model, serial number and value
  • A total value for small tools below that threshold
  • Where equipment is kept overnight and how it is secured
  • Whether you rent or borrow equipment and how often
  • Materials you install and their value on site before installation
  • Theft and damage losses in the last five years
02 / WHAT MOVES THE PRICE
  • Total values and the largest itemsThe schedule is the rating base; one large machine often drives the premium.
  • Storage and securityEquipment locked in a yard with cameras rates below equipment left on open sites.
  • DeductibleA higher deductible lowers the premium, especially on small tools.
  • ValuationReplacement cost on scheduled items costs more than actual cash value.
  • Rented and borrowed equipment limitAdding coverage for what you rent raises the premium a little and avoids rental-house claims.
Direction only — the carriers' quotes carry the figures.
03 / HAVE READY
  • An equipment list with serial numbers and replacement values
  • Your current inland marine or equipment floater declarations
  • Rental agreements that make you responsible for rented equipment
  • Loss runs if you have had theft or damage claims

What the comparison takes apart

Each quote's schedule is matched against the equipment list you gave, so a missing item shows as a row. Then the blanket small-tools limit and per-item cap, the valuation basis, the deductible, the rented and borrowed limit, installation floater coverage for materials on site, and conditions such as theft from unattended vehicles. The cheaper quote with half the schedule is visible as exactly that.

Keeping the schedule honest

Add equipment when you buy it and remove it when you sell it. Items not on the schedule above the threshold are not covered beyond the blanket cap. From the policy page, adding an item is a change request that goes to the carrier automatically.

Installation floaters

If you buy materials that sit on a site before you install them, an installation floater covers them until the work is accepted. Contractors who skip this discover the property owner's policy does not cover their materials. The comparison shows whether each quote includes it and at what limit.

After you buy

The equipment schedule lives on the policy card, certificates to general contractors show the coverage, and the renewal application carries the schedule forward for you to confirm.

Questions people actually ask

Isn't my equipment covered by my property policy?

Only while it is at the insured premises, and often only up to a small off-premises limit. Tools in trucks and on job sites need inland marine.

Scheduled or blanket?

Schedule items above the carrier's threshold with serial numbers and values; cover small tools under a blanket limit with a per-item cap. The comparison shows both parts of each quote.

Is equipment in my truck covered overnight?

Usually, subject to the deductible and sometimes to a locked-vehicle or visible-forced-entry condition. The comparison flags theft-from-vehicle conditions, because they differ.

Does this cover equipment I rent from a rental yard?

Only with rented and borrowed equipment coverage, at a limit you choose. Rental agreements usually make you responsible for the full value, so match the limit to what you rent.
