Matching motor truck cargo: how the comparison works

QUICK ANSWER

Motor truck cargo pays for damage to or loss of the goods a carrier hauls for others, from the shipper's dock to delivery, including theft, collision damage and, with an endorsement, refrigeration breakdown. Shippers and brokers set the limit in the contract. Carriers quote it on the commodities, the limit per vehicle, the radius and the security practices. CoverMatch compares the commodities excluded, the theft conditions and the reefer provisions side by side.

CoverMatch Your broker contract names a cargo limit per load. One quote meets it; two carry a lower limit and an unattended-vehicle condition.

What motor truck cargo responds to

Physical loss or damage to goods in your care as a carrier, from the perils the form covers, while loaded, in transit and, within the conditions, while the vehicle is parked. The shipper's claim for the ruined load is paid up to the limit per vehicle, subject to the commodity and theft conditions.

How CoverMatch compares the quotes

Limit per vehicle, commodities covered and excluded, unattended-vehicle and theft conditions, reefer breakdown, debris removal and earned freight extensions, and the deductible. The AI summary states the differences; a licensed agent explains them.

What to watch for

A commodity you haul listed in the exclusions, a theft condition the drivers cannot meet on a real route, and a limit below the contract.

Questions people actually ask

Does commercial auto cover the load?

No. Auto covers the truck and the liability for the crash; cargo covers the goods on board. A carrier needs both, and shippers ask for the cargo certificate specifically.

What is usually excluded?

Certain commodities (tobacco, alcohol, electronics above a value, live animals), theft from an unattended vehicle outside the conditions, contraband, and spoilage without a reefer breakdown endorsement. The policy explainer in the wallet lists each quote's exclusions.

What limit do we need?

The limit the contracts name per load, with room for the most valuable commodity hauled. A broker agreement's limit is a floor, not a guess.

Does it cover a load we subcontract to another carrier?

Only with contingent cargo coverage or when the subcontractor carries its own; the comparison shows whether contingent coverage is offered.
