Matching product liability: how the comparison works

QUICK ANSWER

Product liability pays when something you made, imported or sold injures someone or damages property after it left your hands. It usually sits inside general liability as the products–completed operations aggregate, and for makers and importers it is quoted on its own. Carriers want to know what the product is, where it is made, who buys it and whether anything has been recalled. CoverMatch compares the aggregates, the vendors endorsements and the exclusions carrier by carrier.

CoverMatch Your largest retailer's vendor agreement asks for a vendors endorsement. Two of three quotes include it blanket; the comparison flags the third.
01 / WHAT UNDERWRITERS ASK
  • What the product is, what it is made of and what it is used for
  • Where it is manufactured and whether you import, private-label or make it
  • Annual sales by channel: wholesale, retail, online, marketplaces
  • Quality control, testing, labelling and any certifications
  • Recalls, complaints or claims in the last five years
  • Whether buyers require you to name them as additional insured
02 / WHAT MOVES THE PRICE
  • Product typeA candle, a supplement, a children's toy and a machine part carry very different injury potential.
  • Sales volumeThe rating base; more units in circulation means more exposure.
  • Country of originImported goods with no reachable manufacturer make the importer the target.
  • Markets servedChildren's, medical, food and automotive markets are rated up or excluded.
  • Recall and claims historyA prior recall raises the quote and often brings an exclusion.
Direction only — the carriers' quotes carry the figures.
03 / HAVE READY
  • Product list with materials, labels and instructions
  • Sales figures by channel for the last twelve months
  • Supplier and manufacturer agreements, with any indemnity or insurance language
  • Testing and certification records
  • Vendor agreements from buyers that name insurance requirements

What products liability responds to

Bodily injury or property damage caused by a product after it has left your possession, and by completed work. The claim can be a defect in design, manufacture or labelling, and it follows the product onto other people's shelves and into their homes. The products–completed operations aggregate is the policy-year cap for all such claims.

How CoverMatch compares the quotes

Each occurrence and the products aggregate, the vendors endorsement (blanket or scheduled), the territory, the exclusions by product or market, whether recall expense is offered, and the contractual-liability wording buyers rely on. The AI summary names the differences; a licensed agent explains them.

What to watch for

A products aggregate smaller than the general aggregate, imported goods excluded for an importer, and a vendors endorsement that names one buyer when the business sells to many. Each shows as a row in the comparison.

Questions people actually ask

I only resell products. Why would I need products coverage?

Because the injured customer sues everyone in the chain and the seller is the one in reach when the maker is overseas. Products coverage inside general liability answers it; check the limit and the imported-goods exclusion.

What is a vendors endorsement?

An endorsement that makes your retailer or distributor an additional insured for claims from your product. Large buyers require it in the vendor agreement; the live certificate from the wallet shows it once the endorsement is on the policy.

Is a recall covered by product liability?

No. Liability pays the injured customer; recall expense coverage pays to pull the product. They are separate coverages and the comparison shows whether each quote offers recall as an option.

What is commonly excluded?

Specific products or markets (aircraft, medical devices, children's goods), efficacy claims, and sometimes imported goods. The policy explainer in the wallet reads the exclusions on every quote.
