Matching surety and license bonds: how the comparison works

QUICK ANSWER

A surety bond is a guarantee to someone else: a licensing board, a city or a project owner. If the business fails to meet an obligation, the surety pays the obligee and then collects from the business. Licence and permit bonds are small and quick; contract bonds for construction are underwritten on financials. CoverMatch lines up the bond quotes against the obligation that requires them and keeps each bond with its licence or contract in the wallet.

What a surety bond responds to

A failure by the business to meet an obligation the bond guarantees: to follow licensing rules, to complete a permitted job, to perform a contract or to pay subs and suppliers. The obligee makes a claim, the surety investigates and pays, and the business reimburses the surety under the indemnity agreement signed at issue.

How CoverMatch compares the quotes

Surety and its rating, penal sum against the requirement, rate and term, the indemnity required, and for contract bonds the single and aggregate capacity. The comparison keeps the bond beside the obligation it serves.

What to watch for

A bond form that does not match the obligee's required wording, a penal sum below the statute, and an expiry that falls before the licence renewal.

Questions people actually ask

Is a bond the same as insurance?

No. Insurance pays you; a bond pays the obligee and the surety comes to you for reimbursement. It is a guarantee of your performance, required by the authority, not protection for your business.

How fast can a licence bond be issued?

Small licence and permit bonds are usually issued the same day on credit. Contract bonds take longer because the surety reviews financials and the project.

Does the bond renew with the policy?

It renews with the licence, permit or project, on its own schedule. The wallet keeps each bond with the obligation it serves and flags the renewal.

What is a fidelity bond?

A different thing: crime coverage that protects you or your clients against employee theft. Some contracts say bonded when they mean this. The comparison labels which kind each quote is.
