STRAIGHT ANSWER

Do I need commercial auto if I use my own car for work?

QUICK ANSWER

It depends on the use. Occasional errands in a personal car are usually within a personal policy, but regular deliveries, carrying tools or equipment, transporting clients or goods, a vehicle titled to the business, or a vehicle with your logo generally fall outside it and need a commercial auto policy. If employees drive their own cars for your work, your business needs hired and non-owned auto coverage for its own liability.

The test insurers apply

Who owns the vehicle, how it is used, and how often. A vehicle owned by the business belongs on a commercial policy. A personally owned vehicle used mostly for personal driving with occasional business errands usually stays personal. Regular business use — deliveries, service calls, hauling, client transport — is commercial use, and heavier vehicles and vehicles with commercial equipment are commercial regardless.

Why it costs more

Commercial policies rate on business use, carry higher liability limits that contracts require, and list drivers and vehicles. The price reflects the exposure the personal policy was excluding.

The employee case

If staff run errands in their own cars, your business can be sued for an accident even though it does not own the car. Hired and non-owned auto liability covers that, either on a commercial auto policy or endorsed onto general liability or a BOP. The employee's own policy still covers their car.

Questions people actually ask

What happens if I have an accident on a delivery with a personal policy?

The insurer can deny the claim under the business-use exclusion, leaving you responsible for the other party's injuries and your own vehicle.

What is hired and non-owned auto?

Coverage for your business's liability when a rented vehicle or an employee's personal car is used for business. It does not cover the employee's vehicle itself.

Does a delivery platform's insurance cover me?

Platform policies cover specific periods and often only liability above your own policy. Read the platform's requirement and the gaps between periods.
