STRAIGHT ANSWER

How long is a certificate of insurance valid?

QUICK ANSWER

A certificate is a snapshot: it reflects the policies as they stood on the date it was issued, and it carries each policy's expiration date. It is not valid past those dates and is not reliable after a cancellation or change, which is why holders ask for a fresh certificate at every renewal. A live certificate link stays current because it reads the policy record each time it is opened.

Why dates matter

Each policy line on a certificate shows an effective and expiration date. A holder reading the certificate after the expiration date learns nothing about whether the policy renewed. Mid-term cancellations are worse: the certificate still looks valid while the coverage is gone.

The renewal cycle

With a PDF certificate, every policy renewal means a new certificate for every holder — landlord, general contractors, clients, licensing. For a small business with three policies and a dozen holders, that is a few dozen certificates a year, each one a request to the agent.

The live alternative

A live certificate is a private link per holder. Opening it shows the current status of each coverage line with the time it was checked, the holder's own status (additional insured, waiver), and a PDF download. When a policy renews, cancels or is scheduled for cancellation, the page updates and the holder is told. You share it once.

Questions people actually ask

Does the holder get notified if my policy cancels?

A traditional certificate promises notice only where an endorsement provides it; many do not. A live certificate notifies the holder the moment a line changes.

Can I reuse last year's certificate?

No. The policy numbers and dates will be wrong once the policies renew. Issue a new one, or share a live link once.

Who issues the certificate?

The agent or carrier that services the policy. CoverMatch issues live certificates for the policies in your wallet, which are the policies CoverMatch services; a policy still with another agent has to be moved to CoverMatch first, or its certificate requested from that agent.
