STRAIGHT ANSWER

What is an experience modification rate?

QUICK ANSWER

An experience modification rate is a factor applied to your workers' compensation premium that compares your claims over a three-year window with businesses of similar size and class. A mod of 1.00 is average; 0.85 means a 15 percent credit, 1.20 a 20 percent surcharge. Businesses above a state premium threshold receive one from the rating bureau; many general contractors require subcontractors to be at or below 1.00.

The idea

Two businesses with the same payroll and class codes can have different injury records. The experience mod lets the premium reflect that record. Expected losses are calculated from your payroll by class; actual losses from your claims; the ratio, with weighting that limits the effect of one large claim, becomes the factor.

What moves it

Frequency more than severity. Several small claims move the mod more than one large one, because the formula weights the first dollars of each claim most heavily. Prompt reporting, return-to-work programs and medical-only claims (which many states discount) keep it down.

Where to find yours

On the experience rating worksheet from your state's rating bureau or the national bureau, usually sent to your agent each year before renewal. Upload it to the wallet and the renewal application carries it to the carriers, and your general contractor's certificate request can show it.

Questions people actually ask

Why does my mod matter beyond the premium?

Project owners and general contractors use it as a safety signal and set cut-offs in their contracts. A high mod can disqualify a bid.

How quickly does a claim leave the calculation?

The window typically covers three completed policy years, excluding the most recent, so a claim affects the mod for about three years.

Can I get the mod corrected?

Yes, when the payroll or claim data the bureau used is wrong. Review the worksheet each year; CoverMatch keeps it with the policy.
